Xena Is Out Of The Closet In 'Warrior Princess' Reboot – Newsy

The ’90s fantasy series will return, and this time, the main characters will be more forthright about their relationship.

Sure, Xena was forged in the heat of battle, but how does this Warrior Princess identify in the heat of passion?
Lucy Lawless’ character in Xena was widely centered around her relationship with Gabrielle, played by Renee O’Connor. However, the show never explicitly identified them as an item.
But being in the closet is so ’90s. The show’s executive producer said Xena will be openly gay in the upcoming reboot.
“There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication,” said executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
The show debuted in 1995 and has been off the air for 15 years. The reboot is set to drop later in 2016, and audiences are hoping to see that rekindled flame.

  1. Lucy Lawless and Renée O' Connor are great actresses and I'm a big fan of them both. But I would just like the Xena show to continue on with or without them.

  2. oh god. everyone needs to stfu! xena and Gabrielle ain't gay. both love men. they are best friends. like sisters. yes they kissed so what don't make them gay. Gabrielle begged xena to take her with her to train her how to be a warrior. not because she was in love with her. oh god I hope they don't make xena gay ugh.

  3. As long as Obama is president, being gay will always be promoted as the premiere way of life by the mainstream media. The problem is they don't include all the other things that come along with it. Suicidal thoughts, child molestation, and sexually transmitted disease. If you're gonna make her gay, show the ugly part of it too.

Uh oh. Did I say that? Here comes the political correct police with comments below.

  4. The only reason the later seasons portrayed a more romantic relationship between the two ladies was because of the pressure from the lesbian community to do so. There was crazy hype about it then, and they submitted to popular opinion of their fanbase at the time which was mostly lesbian. Let's not forget how many dicks Xena has taken during her character's entire show run, and also on the cross-over hercules episodes. At the very most, she's bi-sexual.

  5. Sick and ick. I remember the last season on Xena where every scene was Xena and Gabrielle telling each other, "You're my joy" "You're my soul mate".  Ugh. And when they killed off Joxer, they couldn't even give him an heroic death. He died a buffoon. They would never give him a heroic death. They didn't want to upset the man hating lesbians that watched the show. Now the new show is going to cater only to them. No doubt, this one will be set in the present. And the episodes will be college girls getting raped by all the men in the college. Students, professors, the janitor and the dean. And of course let's not forget the "gender pay gap". I'm sure Xena and Gabrielle are going to be angry and overweight. Don't expect hot lesbian action. Sorry folks, I'll stick to the original. Personally I think they should add some CGI blood to the sword fights.

  6. Cool! That is long overdue. Many people will be very happy about this. And! If a few bigots have a problem with it, then that is just delicious Karma paying them a visit, because they deserve any stress that they needless cause themselves over their support of backward KKK ideology. 😉
