Crazy Rich Asians is based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name. It’s the first Hollywood studio-backed film directed by an Asian-American director and all-Asian cast in 25 years since The Joy Luck Club back in 1993. Director Jon M. Chu assembled a cast that includes Fresh Off The Boat’s Constance Wu and newcomer, and extremely handsome, Henry Golding.
The film follows Nick Young (Henry Golding), a history professor at NYU, who’s falling in love with fellow professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu). When he travels back to Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding, he brings Rachel with him. And before long, his secret is out. Nick is from a family that is worth $13 billion. He’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.
