This Is What Happens When You Order A Gay Cake In Canada

Cakes are big news in the LGBT community: The Supreme Court is currently considering the case of a Colorado baker who refused to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple because it conflicted with his religious beliefs.

Meanwhile, the state of California filed a restraining order against Cathy Miller, owner of Tastries Bakery in Bakersfield, after she also refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The Department of Fair Employment and Housing asked for a temporary order barring Miller from selling any items she was unwilling to sell to all of her customers.

It’s enough to make you lose your appetite.

Meanwhile north of the border, Chris Farias of Hamilton, Ontario, had a somewhat different experience in a bakery. Faris wanted to celebrate his upcoming marriage to boyfriend Jared Lenover with a special cake.

“I called my local bakery, Cake and Loaf Bakery, and requested the GAYEST cake they could make,” Farias recounted on Facebook. “Without hesitation, and with much excitement, they said ’We’ll do it!’”

He posted a picture of the confectionary creation, adding “I am in tears right now I’m so happy.”

“Being part of the LGBTQ+ community isn’t easy for many—and that’s an huge understatement,” Farias added. “But I am proud of who I am, and how far WE have come. I am proud to be a gay Canadian who can order a cake and not get turned down because of who I love. I love this country, and I love my community.”

Please don’t rub it in, Chris! (Kidding—Mazel tov to you and Jared!)

The owners of Cake and Loaf shared pictures of the cake on Facebook, writing, “the positivity that has been shared since creating this cake has made our hearts truly warm, and very proud to be Canadian. As a business we will continue to strive to have an inclusive, positive and safe environment for our customers AND employees- We will say it loud and proud, as often as we can… and hopefully, always with cake ❤️ #morecakelesshate”

Chris has also created a special “It’s Not About A Cake” t-shirt, with proceeds benefiting LGBT-inclusive charities.
