To say the road has been rocky to bring this Queen biopic to life would be an understatement. It appears it was all worth it because the first teaser trailer is dazzling.
The long and winding road began in 2010 when Sacha Baron Cohen was cast to play Freddie Mercury. Three years later, he quit due to creative differences with surviving members of Queen. Later that year, Ben Whishaw was brought in to replace Cohen. That also didn’t pan out. Ultimately, Rami Malek snagged the role in 2016 with Bryan Singer tapped to direct. However, just weeks before production finished, Singer was fired and the hunt for a new director was on. Despite all that, the film has come to fruition.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury’s lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.
Joining Malek in the film are Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aiden Gillen, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers. Can’t wait to see Myers in the film given his love for the band. Remember his homage in Wayne’s World?
