Leaked Mormon document reveals masturbation can make you gay (Image: Flickr | Tim Evanson)
A leaked Mormon document from 1981 warns against young people masturbating because it will turn them gay.
The guidebook, published by MormonLeaks states: ‘Early masturbation experiences introduce the individual to sexual thoughts which may become habit forming and reinforcing to homosexual interests.
‘Self-masturbation is almost universal among those who engage in homosexual behavior, and is a very difficult habit for most to overcome.’
The guidebook also warns against people who do not renounce their sexual orientation.
It states: ‘Persons who have engaged in homosexual activities and who have not totally repented and forsaken these evil practices will not be admitted to study at or be employed by any church university, college, school, or program.’
The pamphlet was created in 1981 and some Mormons say it still reflects belies within the church.
It labels homosexuality as a ‘grave concern’ and offers way for same-sex attracted Mormons to repent.
The church has never distanced themselves from these guidelines in a formal capacity.
Ryan McKnight, founder of MormonLeaks, told Newsweek: ‘If you were to track the rhetoric coming from the top leadership, you will see somewhat of a shift in their views on the subject.
‘Many members of the Mormon church still believe many of the concepts and ideas put forth in the 1981 manual.
‘Most of the shift has come in the form of simply not talking about the issue as much,’ he said.
Sex ed also makes kids gay
Brooke Ashjian leads the Mormon school board at Fresno Unified and believes the more kids know about homosexuality, the more they might turn to it.
He believes if you teach kids ‘it’s ok to be LGBT… maybe you will sway the kid to go that way.’
It’s not the first time the Mormon church has told kids in an official capacity being gay is not okay.
An ex-Mormon gay man wrote for Gay Star News earlier this year about what it was like in the church. He fell in love with his companion on a Mormon mission.
He wrote: ‘A tall, thin, relatively in shape man with brown hair caught my eye. When the mission president announced that I was going to be with the man I had noticed, I gave him a big hug.
‘I felt something that I hadn’t felt before, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
‘As time passed, we grew close. I gradually became aware that I was deeply attracted to him,’ he said.
