Lee Daniels Tapped To Produce Lesbian Love Story

Lee Daniels has signed on to produce the indie drama Pimp, about a young lesbian born into the world of street hustling. After her father (DMX) abandons the family, Wednesday (Keke Palmer) looks after her sex-worker mother (The Help’s Aunjanue Ellis) while dreaming of a better life for herself and her girlfriend, Nikki (Haley Ramm).

To help build a better life, Nikki becomes a sex worker herself, and Wednesday serves as her pimp. But the couple face trouble when a rival pimp (Edi Gathegi) threatens to put them out of business.

Pimp is the first movie Daniels will produce, though he directed Precious and The Butler, and has shepherded Empire and Star on the small screen.

According to IMDB, the movie is still in post production and a release date has not been set.

Last month, Daniels told THR he’s planning a remake of the 80’s classic Terms of Endearment with Oprah in the Shirley MacLaine role. He also intends to add a storyline about a black men with HIV/AIDS who transmits the virus to his female partner.

“So many African American women died. I want to make Flap [played by Jeff Daniels in the 1983 film] gay and infect the Debra Winger character. We’ll explore the ’80s in a different way.”
