When Democrat Doug Jones defeated anti-gay Senate-hopeful Roy Moore, his son was thrilled.
Carson Jones, who is openly gay, said he ‘couldn’t be prouder’ of his dad for the election win on Tuesday (12 December).
‘I am obviously thrilled with my dad’s victory,’ he told the Advocate. ‘We have been overwhelmed by the support of so many people that made this happen.
‘Alabama made a really big statement that unity wins out. I couldn’t be prouder of him or my home state,’ he added.
Carson Jones describes himself as a ‘Southern gentleman’ and a zookeeper.
He’s also a ‘gym junkie, adventurer and sushi addict.’
Alabama is a traditionally conservative southern state but Doug Jones won with 49.9% of the votes.
Anti-gay Republican candidate Roy Moore
Doug Jones’ competitor Roy Moore was caught up in a scandal involving allegations of sexual assault to a 14-year-old girl.
He’s also staunchly anti-LGBTI.
In a bitter concession speech, Moore said: ‘Immorality sweeps over our land.
‘Today we no longer recognize the universal truth that God is the author of our life and liberty.
‘Abortion, sodomy and materialism have taken the place of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’
He continues: ‘We’ve redefined marriage and destroyed the basis of family, which is the building block of our country. We’ve even begun to recognize the right of a man to claim to be a woman, and vice versa.’
