Queer filmmaker Bruce LaBruce is back with The Misandrists, coming to New York’s East Village Cinema on May 25.

LaBruce is known for transgressive fare like Raspberry Reich, Gerontophilia and Hustler White, and Misandrists is no different: Shot in Germany, it centers on an injured leftist who discovers the remote stronghold of the Female Liberation Army (FLA), a radical women’s group determined to “overthrow the patriarchy, liberate women, and usher in a new world order” where women rule.

Taking pity on him, one of the FLA’s you recruits hides the soldier in the basement of their headquarters, where the group’s secrets threaten to spill out.

LaBruce doesn’t shy away from explicit sexual content, though he tells Dazed that for this film, “I wanted it to be like a 70s soft-core porn film: You can tell that the women are being intimate with each other but it is not focusing on that.”

He also opted to crowdfund the movie to retain creative control.

“I feel like I can’t wait two years to make a film, so I just decided to make one with no budget and finance it,” he says. “It was great because I wrote it in December and January and filmed it in April so it was like super fast. And also you don’t have those restrictions where you don’t have money people looking over your shoulder.”

After its New York premiere, The Misandrists will open at Los Angeles’ Nuart Theatre on June 1, with LaBruce introducing the film, followed by screenings in New Orleans, Seattle, Denver, Philadelphia, and other cities.
