A Bisexual 12-Year-Old's Parents Say Bullying Led Him To Commit Suicide

A preteen from Mississippi took his own life, and his parents say school bullies are to blame.

On March 6, the body of 12-year-old Andrew “Andy” Leach was discovered by his brother in the garage, with a note left for his parents. His death came after a period of relentless bullying, his parents told WREG Memphis. The sixth-grader had began to question his sexuality but when he opened up to his peers, he reportedly became a target for bullies.

“He finally came out with the information at school that he thought he may be bisexual,” Andy’s father, Matt, said. “And I think that really amped up the bullying. Kids were telling him, ’We’re gonna put hands on you. You’re not going to make it out of this bathroom.’ Things of that nature.”

They told administrators, but nothing seemed to change.

Andy’s mom, Cheryl Hudson, told Metro that she later uncovered multiple suicide notes from Andy, indicating he’d been thinking about taking his life for some time.

Administrators at Southaven Middle School are investigating the allegations of bullying.

“All bullying reports are treated with the utmost importance,” the district said in a statement. “Students and parents are encouraged to contact school officials anytime there are bullying concerns.”

When Hudson posted about her loss on Facebook, she was met mostly with support. But at least one commenter lashed out, blaming her for Andy’s death.

“No 12 year old has the brain maturity or brain function even understand what gay, straight or bisexual is,” he wrote. “This was instilled by yourself. You encourage this poor child to be proud of this and it’s ok to come out when you should have protected him. So you only have yourself to blame.”

Hughes called the comment “disgusting.”

She and Matt remember their son as a “very loving young boy” with a “contagious smile.” A GoFundMe has been launched to cover his memorial expenses.
