Viccky Gutierrez is the second reported transgender person killed in the United States in 2018.
A young Latina woman from Honduras, Gutierrez was an active member of the [email protected] Coalition’s Los Angeles organization. [email protected] Coalition is a group focused on helping trans Latinx people in the US.
The group’s President and CEO, Bamby Salcedo, announced Gutierrez’s death in Facebook live video on Thursday (11 January). The English part starts around the 10 minute mark.

‘Just to learn that she’s no longer with us is really sad,’ she said. ‘And it’s not that she is gone, it is the way that she was murdered. She was brutally murdered, and we believe that it was intention, we believe that it was premeditated…She was burned in her apartment.’
LAPD’s West Bureau Division and Los Angeles Fire Department responded Wednesday (10 January) morning to a fire.
According to KTLA, authorities are describing the fire as ‘suspicious’. However, they gave ‘no further details’ on why it was suspicious.
They also have yet to officially identify the body, but Salcedo is certain it was Gutierrez.
‘There’s a strong possibility it came from work,’ she stated. They believe it could have been a client of Gutierrez’s.
She is the second known trans person killed so far this year. Police found Christa Leigh Steele-Knudslien, the first trans person known dead this year, on 5 January in her home in Massachusetts.
A vigil is being held for Gutierrez tonight, Friday 12 January at 7 pm in Los Angeles. A GoFundMe has also been set up to help with her funeral services.
