RuPaul’s “Entertainment Weekly” Cover Wins Magazine Award

RuPaul has snatched another trophy: An Entertainment Weekly magazine cover featuring the Drag Race diva has won the American Society of Magazine Editors’ 2018 Best Cover Contest.

The June 23 issue, “Let’s Hear It for the Red, White and Ru,” was voted most popular among readers, with some 28,000 votes.

The bright, colorful cover art, part of EW’s annual Pride Month coverage, declared RuPaul America’s “First Lady of Drag.”

“It’s a real milestone in my career,” Ru told EW at the time.

Among the finalists for readers’ pick was the January 2017 “Gender Revolution” issue of National Geographic, which featured trans youth Avery Jackson.

For cover of the Year, ASME’s board chose the August 28 issue of The New Yorker, with Donald Trump blowing sails.

“Americans have always relied on magazine covers to tell us where we are and where we’re going,” said ASME chief executive Sid Holt. “The entries in this year’s ASME Best Cover Contest continue in that tradition. There’s not a lot more that needs to be said. This year’s top covers—EW’s ’Let’s Hear It for the Red, White and Ru’ and especially The New Yorker’s ’Blowhard’—speak for themselves.”
