A Right-Wing Republican Candidate’s Parents Just Gave The Maximum Donation To His Lesbian Democrat Opponent

Politics can divide even the closest of families: A Republican candidate’s mother and father have just donated the maximum amount allowed—to his Democratic opponent.

The parents of Kevin Nicholson, an ex-Marine running for senate in Wisconsin, cut a check for $2,700 to incumbent Senator Tammy Baldwin, the first out senator in U.S. history.

That’s the maximum donation permitted, according to Democratic Party rules.

“My parents have a different worldview than I do, and it is not surprising that they would support a candidate like Tammy Baldwin, who shares their perspective,” Nicholson told CNN of his folks, Michael and Donna. “Regardless of who may disagree with my life decisions, I would not trade these experiences for anything.

The 39-year-old from Delafield admits he wasn’t “born” a conservative and says his experiences with the Armed Forces “always guide my views as Wisconsin’s next U.S. Senator.”

Last year Nicholson came out in support of Donald Trump’s proposed ban on trans people in the military, saying if this is what the generals want “I think it’s good advice to take.”

Baldwin, unsurprisingly opposed the ban. “A ban against any patriotic American who wants to serve our country is wrong,” she tweeted. “We shouldn’t discriminate anyone who wants to serve.”

Before Nicholson can face her in November, though, he must defeat fellow Republican Leah Vukmir in the Wisconsin GOP primary. But some are questioning his conservative credentials: Nicholson was once president of the College Democrats and actually spoke at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in support of Al Gore.

He continued to vote Democrat at least until 2008, but swears he’s since had a change of heart.
